Good morning my lovely art students!
Here we are on the first day of online school.
It’s been such a crazy new experience for all of us, but I am excited to begin our photography adventure.
When we all met as a class the last time on Friday 3/13, I had given you all the hand-out for the list of photography basics we will be covering. I sent an email to all students who were absent that day with instructions to come here to this website for all further communication. Feel free to email me at any time: [email protected] OR
[email protected]
Hopefully you have had a chance to look over the hand-out. It is the first four pages with numbered 1 -15 photography basics. Number one on the list: Rule of Thirds. We will begin with that starting tomorrow Tuesday, 3/24. The school wants us to start out slowly and not give any assignments on this first day. We need to take a deep breath and get used to our new format.
The overall concern is that we don’t get stressed out about how this is all going to work. Remind yourself that this is new and unfamiliar to all of us and there will be issues we will have to figure out. I know that most of your teachers will be having a Google hang-out or Zoom.us type of live interaction. For this Art class, we will only be using this website for assignments and you will send your communication and photos to me at my school email listed above. Make sure you are spelling L-O-S-N-E-S-S correctly.
You can start emailing me and sending any photos you take from now on. Remember that I want only photos that you take from this day forward purposely for the assignments as they are given. If you took a great photo in the past, you can send it to me just to share it with me, but not to satisfy an assignment. Please do not send me photos you took last year, start taking new photos from what you will be learning as an artist.
You will see that the introduction page is mainly about Art Elements and Principles. Today you should look over that intro page and start thinking about the kind of photos you should be composing. Take photos that have visual interest, not just pictures that satisfy a checklist.
Let’s start with the first basic Art Element of Line. Today start looking for varieties of lines in your composition. I will attach examples below of photos that use the element of line in the subject matter. Look for different types of lines in your world; straight, zig-zag, curly, jagged or any interesting lines you see. Look for patterns that the lines make and keep it simple at first.
Tomorrow Tuesday 3/24 I will post our first assignment of using The Rule of Thirds in your photographs. Try to start by taking photos of any visually interesting lines that you see, and then we will apply the Rule of Thirds to your interesting lines photos. Again, please do not stress about this. Send me your thoughts or concerns about anything to my email address.
We are starting out slow and simple, but we will hopefully get used to this new format and start creating some great photographs as we learn together. I am attaching examples of using Line in your first photos on the next page on the menu titled “Using Line in Photography” Look at the examples and start taking photos that use lines in visually interesting ways.
Have fun and I’ll “see” you tomorrow!
